Portugal Research Visa - Hosted Highly Qualified Research
Portugal research visa is the phrase many scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and laboratory staff type when they have a Portuguese host and need residence to carry out research. In a large share of those files, the permit family is highly qualified activity residence (HQA), not a student visa and not a capital route. The search term names the work. It does not name a separate, simpler product.
Who uses the Portugal research visa search
Typical searchers already have, or are negotiating, a relationship with a Portuguese research unit, laboratory, funded project, or university institute. They need to know which residence heading covers paid or hosted research, whether a grant letter is enough, and how a spouse would be treated. Those questions are research-specific. They are not a second copy of the general Portugal HQA visa guide.
A degree program, an Erasmus stay, or a short visiting-scholar invitation may sit on a different permit. If the activity is study rather than highly qualified professional research, do not force this page’s heading onto the file. If the person will live on remote income without a Portuguese research host, this is also the wrong starting point.
What a research file still has to prove
A host letter, a grant award, or a university email is not, by itself, a residence decision. The case still has to show highly qualified activity, a host that can support the filing, and the applicant’s identity, record, and subsistence evidence. Salary floors and documentary lists change. Confirm the 2026 AIMA and consular instructions for research hosts rather than copying a colleague’s pack from a previous year.
