Portugal HQA Visa Research Project - Funded Host Pathway
Portugal HQA visa research project files are hosted posts on a named laboratory, grant, or funded work package in Portugal. The project letter is evidence of the host relationship. It is not a residence decision on its own. People who arrived here from a “research visa” search should still read Portugal research visa for that phrase, then confirm HQA visa eligibility for the role.
What a project host has to show
A usable host pack names the Portuguese entity, the activity, the duration, and how the person is paid or maintained. A grant award number without a Portuguese contracting party is weak. A PI email without institutional letterhead is weaker. The activity still has to be highly qualified under the tests in force in 2026, not merely “research” in ordinary English.
What a grant letter does not replace
Identity, police certificates, subsistence, and the rest of the filing pack still apply. Salary floors, where they apply to the contract type, still apply. Family coverage is not automatic because the science is interesting. Those admission tests sit on who qualifies, not on this page.
When the host is a university instead
If the person is hired onto academic staff or an institute contract, rather than attached to a single funded work package, use the HQA visa university pathway. If the person is enrolled as a student, this is the wrong cluster. The program overview remains the Portugal HQA visa guide.
Read the project letter against the eligibility tests, not against the grant title
This page is informational. It is not legal, tax, or immigration advice. Host letters and grant instruments differ. A licensed professional should match the Portuguese entity and the activity to the current list.
